Desert. Such a simple word, yet such a complex concept. For many, it's just a wasteland, bypassed or traversed as quickly as humanly possible. For others, it's a place to explore and experience, an opportunity to challenge oneself. For others yet, it's a spiritual dimension where, stripped bare, they attempt to take measure of who they are. And yet, it's also a place where people live, often at the margin of society. Loners, misfits, or simply dreamers, choosing a life outside the mainstream in order to be free.
My images are simply records of what caught my eye during my travels through the California desert. As an outsider, I find myself wanting to understand what it's like to be part of this extreme environment, but I cannot pretend that I truly know. I get tantalizing glimpses—always haunting, often beautiful—and yet, like figments, these snatched moments quickly vanish into thin air.
